Extended Health Care

Eligibility to the post-retirement Extended Health Care Plan depends on your retirement date and your employee group.

Plan number 51391: Eligibility criteria for:

  • Employees represented by APOC, CPAA, PSAC, or Urban Postal Operations (UPO) CUPW who retired on or after January 1, 1993.
  • Executive and MGT/XMT employees who retired on or after January 1, 1993, but before January 2, 2011.

To be eligible for the post-retirement Extended Health Care Plan, you must:

  • Have been eligible to be covered under Canada Post’s Extended Health Care Plan (numbers 51391 or 51390) the day before you retired.
  • Have completed the required number of years of continuous service at Canada Post on your date of retirement OR be approved for a disability retirement.
  • Be in receipt of a monthly pension from the defined benefit component of the Canada Post Registered Pension Plan OR have been a member of the Canada Post Group Retirement Savings Plan or the defined contribution component of the Canada Post Registered Pension Plan for at least two years.
  • Be within 10 years of the date on which unreduced benefits are payable to you under the Canada/Quebec Pension Plan if you are a member of the Canada Post Group Retirement Savings Plan or the defined contribution component of the Canada Post Registered Pension Plan.

Plan number 162954: Eligibility criteria for:

  • Executive and MGT/XMT employees who retired on or after January 2, 2011.

To be eligible for the post-retirement Extended Health Care Plan, you must:

  • Have been eligible to be covered under Canada Post’s Extended Health Care Plan (numbers 51391 or 51390) the day before you retired.
  • Have completed the required number of years of continuous service at Canada Post on your date of retirement OR be approved for a disability retirement.
  • Be in receipt of a monthly pension from the defined benefit component of the Canada Post Registered Pension Plan OR have been a member of the Canada Post Group Retirement Savings Plan or the defined contribution component of the Canada Post Registered Pension Plan for at least two years.
  • Be within 10 years of the date on which unreduced benefits are payable to you under the Canada/Quebec Pension Plan if you are a member of the Canada Post Group Retirement Savings Plan or the defined contribution component of the Canada Post Registered Pension Plan.

If you retired before January 1, 1993

You might be eligible for the Public Service Superannuation Act (PSSA) Extended Health Care Plan administered by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat. For more information call 1-800-561-7930 (English) or 1-800-561-7935 (French).

Please note that Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMCs) are not eligible for the post-retirement Extended Health Care Plan.

Continuous service

You must have:

  • Completed at least 15 years of continuous service at Canada Post OR
  • Have been grandfathered with 10 years of continuous service at Canada Post OR
  • Be approved for disability retirement.

Grandfathered employees

  • Urban Postal Operations (UPO) employees represented by CUPW and Executive and Management/Exempt employees who have completed 10 years of continuous service before January 1, 2008, will be eligible for post-retirement benefits even if they retired before having completed 15 years of continuous service.
  • Employees represented by PSAC who have completed 10 years of continuous service before January 1, 2009, will be eligible for post-retirement benefits even if they retired before having completed 15 years of continuous service.
  • Employees represented by APOC and CPAA who have completed 10 years of continuous service before January 1, 2010, will be eligible for post-retirement benefits even if they retired before having completed 15 years of continuous service.

Application deadlines

  • Within 60 days of your retirement date if you’re in receipt of an immediate pension (including a disability pension) from the Canada Post Registered Pension Plan or were a member of the Canada Post Group Retirement Savings Plan or the defined contribution component of the Canada Post Registered Pension Plan.
  • Within five years of your retirement date if you defer your pension under the defined benefit component of the Canada Post Registered Pension Plan; in this case, your application must be received within 60 days of you receiving your first pension payment.

If you’re not eligible

If you’re not eligible for the Canada Post post-retirement Extended Health Care Plan benefits, you may choose to enrol in an individual health plan offered by a third-party supplier such as Great-West Life’s PlanDirect.

PlanDirect offers a variety of plans for different needs and lifestyles. If you were covered by Canada Post’s Extended Health Care Plan and dental plan for at least six months prior to retirement, are not yet 75 years of age and are covered by your provincial or territorial health care plan, you may be eligible for PlanDirect. To qualify, you must apply to PlanDirect within 60 days of your Canada Post coverage ending. Please note that PlanDirect is not subsidized by Canada Post.

Eligibility to post-retirement extended health care benefits is determined by your retirement date, which is the day following your last day of employment. Refer to the table below for more detailed information about coverage and premium rates.
